What Promise Scholars Have to Say
Azhia Alvarez, Dobie High School student
Azhia Alvarez, Dobie HS

"The Promise program has benefited me in such a good way by my parents not worrying about having to pay out of pocket for tuition. Being a first-generation college student, Promise is allowing me to be the first person in my family to attend college."

"This has been one of the biggest blessings for my family and I. When my sister was going to San Jac, she didn’t have this opportunity so it was harder financially. Now that I’m attending college through the Promise program, it’s helped save income that allows my family and I to do more for ourselves."

"I was getting anxiety and feeling like time was running out as far as where I was going to attend college this fall. Even though my grades and GPA were good, I still wasn’t getting accepted into the colleges and universities I had applied to, and I remembered San Jac had the Promise program."

I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to go to college since it’s really expensive, and my parents wouldn’t be able to afford to send me, especially with my other two sisters in school. When I told them about the Promise program, it was a big relief for all of us, and they were happy to know I would be able to go to college now.

— Jennifer Carcamo, Dobie High School

The Promise program has benefited me not only financially, but it has also made me stress free since I’m not worrying about tuition and books. It has also helped me push myself to become better. It’s not just a promise to the ‘county’ but a promise to yourself as well. Being able to be a part of the Promise program has also opened doors for me, such as being able to expand my education to get a better paying, skilled job that will lead to a happy and stable future.

— Jessica Saavedra, Dobie High School

I believe that being a Promise student will expand my horizons as a student because I know I will have to eventually transfer. Also, I feel that the standard San Jacinto College holds its students to is amazing because the professors are very interactive and not afraid to challenge us. I feel like I’m already ahead of the game and ready to jump at any other opportunity available to me.
