Financial Aid Can Make College Affordable
If you have a passion, a dream, a goal that you want to achieve, we’re here to help you get there. At San Jac we have a goal of our own – to never let finances stand in the way of our students’ success. Beyond low tuition and expenses, we offer plentiful opportunities for financial aid. We are dedicated to making sure your education here is as affordable as it is excellent.
Various factors go into determining what kinds of financial aid you can receive. Here at San Jac you’ll find many resources available to you, along with some important dates and details that will need your attention. But don’t worry, we’ll help you understand everything you need to know, and guide you through everything you need to do. So you can move forward with your goals.
First things first. To be eligible for financial aid, you must:
Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
Have a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.
Be enrolled in an eligible program of study and/or accepted as a certificate or degree seeking student at San Jacinto College.
Be in good standing with your payments on any federal or state student loan, and any federal grant repayments.
Take at least the minimum number of hours required by each program.
Maintain good academic progress.
You can easily apply for all types of financial aid with one form – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you want to receive priority consideration, you should apply as soon as the FAFSA is available, usually after October 1. Although SJC awards on a first come, first serve basis, funds for most financial aid programs are awarded on demonstrated financial need.
Awarding of aid normally begins the first week of June and continues throughout the school year until August. To secure an award for fall, applications must be completed by the end of June; to secure an award for spring, applications must be completed by the end of October; to secure an award for summer, applications must be completed by the end of April. An application is considered complete when all documents needed by the Financial Aid Office and the Admissions Office are on file. Please note, if you are submitting documents during peak periods (such as registration) processing time on your file may take 3-5 weeks. Remember, you need to apply for financial aid every year.
The amount of financial aid you get depends a lot on how much college is going to cost you each semester. Of course, this can vary depending on how many hours you take, as well as specific class requirements such as lab fees and books. Here’s a basic example of how much a semester here might cost for Fall 2021.
