For those looking to take PHYS 1301/1101:
Effective the Fall 2020 semester, you will need to have completed the following pre-requisite(s) for PHYS 1301/1101:
- BOTH College Algebra (MATH 1314) AND Plane Trigonometry (MATH 1316) or
- Pre-Calculus (MATH 2412) or higher
For those who haven't completed the MATH 1314/1316 sequence or have not taken MATH 2412 or higher, then you may be eligible to take the ALEKS placement testing for Math, which can help you bypass certain pre-req classes for Physics 1301/1101 and other STEM related classes
JUST ADDED: MATH 1316.201 ONLINE ANYTIME FOR 5BM, CRN 32823. IF YOU CAN TEST OUT OF COLLEGE ALGEBRA WITH THE ALEKS TESTING, YOU WILL ONLY NEED MATH 1316 IN ORDER TO TAKE PHYS 1301/1101.
Most 4-year university math/science degrees have students start in calculus their first semester. This bridge program is a great way for students to get an appropriate start on a STEM degree plan. Ideally students who participate in this should have already taken pre-calculus or calculus in high school or have excelled in their high school algebra courses. This bridge program is not applicable to students who test into developmental math.
This opportunity is available to students on all campuses. Students will be able to take Summer/Fall 2022 placements until the end of September after which point we will open a cohort for Spring 2023.
We have a bridge to calculus program setup to help make sure you are prepared for either pre-calculus or calculus. The program costs $25. This will give you access to the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, & Learning program for 6 months. You take an initial assessment test that determines the prerequisite calculus material you already know. If you score high enough on the initial placement you can email the department chair at the respective campus you are looking to take your Science class, and let them know you passed and they should be able to do an override to allow you to enroll in either pre-calculus or calculus.
However, if you do not pass on the first attempt you are able to use the ALEKS program to work through problems and study to help fill in the gaps in your learning. Afterwards you are allowed to retake the assessment test (for a total of 5 assessments). Your highest assessment score will determine which math course you are placed in. If you are interested please see the attachment for registration instructions. You could start using it today and continue using it even while you are taking your course. All of this can be done in the convenience of your own home or wherever you have computer access. You will need to have a webcam in order to take the exam at home.
A note about the assessments: Make sure you don’t “cheat” on the assessments by looking up answers as you go along or trying to get help from others. You should answer the assessment questions based on what you already know. If you don’t recognize what the problem is asking for or simply don’t know how to do the problem just click the button that says “I don’t know.” Also, please only use the calculator provided in the program. Cheating on this assessment could put you into a course that you are not actually ready for and would likely cause you to end up failing the course because you were not adequately prepared.
