The purpose of this policy is to define a credit hour at San Jacinto College. San Jacinto College utilizes the Carnegie Unit to define a credit hour as one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately 16 weeks for one semester or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. Clinical courses, practicum courses, and courses that include laboratory/skill instruction will require additional contact hours per semester credit hour and will be scheduled in accordance within the Guidelines for Instructional Programs Workforce Education (GIPWE) guidelines. In determining the amount of work required to complete the prescribed learning outcomes, as under current practice, San Jacinto College may take into consideration alternative delivery methods, measurements of student work, and academic calendars. This definition is in accordance with Federal Program Integrity Regulations and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Rules. Carnegie Unit: Equivalent of one hour (50 minutes) of lecture time for a single student per week over the course of a semester.
