San Jacinto College – The National Science Foundation (Award # 2122214) has funded AIM for STEM, a collaborative effort between San Jacinto College and Rice University. A core component of AIM (Acceleration In Mathematics) for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is the creation of a Summer Institute in Mathematics facilitated by Rice University’s Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity.

By improving the quality of the undergraduate experience in developmental courses for STEM majors, the proposed strategy will retain students in STEM fields and increase the number of students earning A.S. degrees at San Jacinto College. This effort will develop 36 AIM pilot courses and impact 44 faculty plus a total of 900 AIM students. With the potential of grade improvement in developmental math, there is a cost benefit effect on student credit costs, a reduction in the number of general studies credits students must pay for. AIM for STEM seeks to discover and implement effective ways to decrease the underrepresentation of racial and cultural minorities in STEM degree programs and careers, addressing a well-recognized problem of critical national importance (National Academies of Sciences, 2011).
