New Student Orientation FAQs
New Student Orientation is a very important step in your transition to becoming a student at San Jacinto College. This experience will provide you with the opportunity to meet other new students, current student leaders, faculty, and staff.
You will leave orientation with the information necessary to be successful at SJC. After you complete orientation, you will be able to meet with an admissions advisor to determine your class schedule.
Yes, orientation is mandatory for all first-time college students, including previous dual credit students. Transfer students with less than 12 successfully completed credit hours are also required to complete an Online Orientation. ESOL students will be required to attend orientation once they complete their language program. International students (F-1 visa) are also required to attend orientation, as well as a separate orientation specific to international students.
Once you have been fully accepted to the college, applied and submitted placement test scores. After orientation is complete you will be ready to register for classes.
Yes; however, you will need to contact the Orientation & Campus Tours Office to sign up instead of using the online sign up system.

Yes, you have to reserve your spot through your SOS account to attend orientation. Walk-ins are not allowed.
You must reserve your spot for orientation through your Student Online System (SOS). Once you log into SOS, you will immediately be taken to a page where you can sign up for orientation.
The available dates are listed on the Secure Online System and the San Jac website.
Yes, there are day and evening sessions. Online orientation is available immediately prior to the start of a term.
Space is limited so we ask that you not bring any guests.
No, we encourage you to make alternative arrangements for childcare so that you may get the most of your orientation.
While we encourage you to attend a campus orientation, there is an online orientation available for those who cannot make it to a campus session. The online option is generally not available until the week before classes begin.
No, there will be a hold on your registration account until you have attended orientation.
Orientation is a three hour program. You must be present for the entire program.
College policies, terminology, technology, resources, success strategies, and a campus tour (not available in online orientation).
Once you have completed orientation (either on campus or online), and you sign in to SOS to register, you will be asked to complete a series of questions about yourself and your experience at orientation. You must answer these brief questions before you will be able to move on to registration.
The hold will be released at the end of campus orientation, after you complete the orientation survey. Once the survey is complete, you will be able to visit with an admissions advisor and register for classes. For online orientation, the survey is available approximately 45 minutes after you complete the online orientation.
You may reschedule your orientation session by signing back into SOS and choosing the reschedule option.
You will need to make sure to attend the entire orientation to get the hold released. If you will be late or need to leave early on that date, you need to choose another orientation date.
No, orientation must be completed before you can register for classes. Contact your campus's Orientation & Campus Tours office for more information.
There are a few reasons this may happen. 1.) You must sign up for online orientation while the online orientation link is activated. If you have not done this, it may be why you are getting the error. 2.) You may have signed up for a campus orientation session. To take online orientation, you will need to sign in to SOS and change your session to online. 3.) You must complete all admissions requirements before completing New Student Orientation.
You will receive an email to your San Jac email account and to the email account you used to complete your application. The email will contain all the information about the orientation session you signed up for.
